Teaching Children from Troubled Homes

Now that we have established that encouragement through academic success is the best way to boost the confidence of a child from a troubled home, let's discover what ways best intrigue these students.

  • Ask questions.
  • Use visual aids.
  • Thoroughly explain the concepts until you are sure every child in the room has an understanding .
  • Use hands-on activities as often as possible.
  • Try to make connections between what the students are learning to past teachings and/or the real world.
  • Hold your students to a high standard by showing relentless hope, confidence and encouragement towards your students.
  • Stand your ground by teaching at a steady or rapid pace.  This may seem like it defies the third bullet, however, it is the teacher's job to figure out what way she can cater to both in the best way for her students.
  • Be enthusiastic, Have fun.  Let your students see why you decided to teach the subject you teach.
  • Use teamwork activities that increases physical activity and allow the students to walk around the room, socialize, and learn at the same time.
  • Assess your students after every project, quiz, test or even taking of notes.  Analyze their physical responses, and decide whether this method was successful or not.
